Cap! Clark &#038; 2 men went out to hunt on N.S. at noon we<br />
Saw Some buffaloe Swimming the river. we Stoped and<br />
Killed 2 of them. proceeded on. Cap! Lewis and Drewyer<br />
went to hunt on an Island opposit to this Isl‘ comes in<br />
River called the Souix pass over of the three Rivers. at the<br />
upper end of the Same Is? comes in a creek called Elm Creek<br />
up the bluffs ab! 2 miles comes in another Creek called wash<br />

creek. Cap! Lewis and Drewyer Came to the Boat again.<br />
about 2 miles we pass? another creek called night Creek, at<br />
which place we Camped on the South Side. Here Drewyer<br />
came to us had killed 2 deer of the black tal kind.</p>

them M. Reed the Deserter, likewise the pettevolior [Little<br />

horse, a frenchman &#038; 7 of the warriers &#038;c. they all came for<br />
the purpose of treating &#038; making friends with the Mahars, &#038;c.<br />
M. Reed tried &#038; towards evening he Reef his punishment,<br />
the chiefs Sorry to have him punished &#038;c. La Liberty has<br />
not returned, it is expected that he has deserted.</p>

Clark &#038; party Cap* Lewis concluded to halt and dry our baggage<br />
dress Some Skins as the party is nearly naked and repair the<br />
canoes. So we Camped5 at a bottom on N. Side drew out the<br />
1 Modern Red Water Creek, in Dawson County.<br />
2 Ten miles below the camp of May 1. 1805. Lewis.<br />
3 Clark had reached Hie mouth of the Yellowstone August .&#8221;>. and encamped<br />
with the intention of awaiting the arrival of Lewis. The ferocity of the mos-<br />
quitoes was such, however, that (he camp became uninhabitable, and so was<br />
abandoned the following daj .<br />
4 The camp was &#8220;in the next bottom above our encampment of the &#8216;J.&#8217;ir&#8217;1<br />
and 24th Of April 1805.&#8221; Lewis.<br />
5 About eight miles by water and three by land, according to Lewis, above<br />

procd on Colter killed a beaver Shortly after about noon about<br />
noon we killed a buck Elk Saved the hide and the best of the<br />
meat, about 2 P. M. we halted at Some old Ind* lodges on S.<br />
Side, here we delayd this afternoon3 to dry our deer Skins<br />
Mountn Sheep Skins &#038;.C. which were near Spoiling as the weather<br />
has been Some time wet. about 3 P. M. a large white bear ap-<br />
proached our Camp as Soon as he discovred us Stood up on his<br />
hind feed and looked at us. Some of the hunters Shot him down,<br />
for the Skin &#038; oil. the other hunters killd four deer and a beaver<br />
this afternoon.<br />
1 Today&#8217;s camp w;is on the site of that of fourteen months earlier. May 29,<br />
1805. II was al the nioulli of Arrow River, on the boundary between Chouteau<br />
and Fergus counties.<br />
2 Eight miles below the mouth of North Mountain (modern Rocky) Creek.<br />
Lewis.<br />
8 This camp was in Dawson County about fifteen miles below the mouth<br />
of Musselshell River.<br />

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>hunters went on Shore to go across a bend after the buffaloe &#038;<br />
we proceeded on with the canoes round sd bend, about 11 A.M.<br />
the hunters killed 4 buffaloe and a buck deer, we halted and took<br />
the best of the meat or fat and proceed on about 3 PM. we<br />
arived at the white bear Camp at the head of the portage. Serg1<br />
Gass and five more of the party were Camped here, they in-<br />
formed us that they had a fine road over.1 they followed up the<br />
Tus-e-paw or buffaloe river2 a Smooth road, then crossed a low<br />
dividing ridge came on Smooth plains, the blanket Mountains<br />
to the left, they had a large road, a band of Indians had went<br />
before them. Saw one of their Sculp poles &#038;C. they Struck the<br />
Meddison river above its forks and followed on down it about 3<br />
days travvel to this place, considerable of cotten timber on its<br />
bottoms, the plain Smooth Soil indifferent except Some of the<br />
river bottoms are rich &#038; good land, they arived here on the 11th<br />
Ins* they had killed a number of fat buffaloe and fat buck deers.<br />
Cap1 Lewis and party lost 7 fine horses at this place, they ex-<br />
pect they were stole by the war parties they hunted for them<br />
untill the 16th Ins1 then gave them out for lost, and then he set<br />
out for to go up morriahs river Drewyer J° &#038; R. Fields only with<br />
him as he left 4 horses to hale the canoes past the portage, he had<br />
not horses enofe to take any more men with him. they had<br />
opened the cash or hole at this place &#038; found Several Small articles<br />
Spoiled and opened the one below the portage and found everry<br />
thing Safe except some of the mens robes, they have geers fixed<br />
for the horses. Mcneal was attacked by a white bear, his horse<br />
threw him So near the bear that he had not time to shoote but<br />
drew his gun and Struck the bear across the head and broke off<br />
the brich of his gun and Stonded3 the bear So that he had time to<br />

a a muddy bad road down the creek [Lolo Creek] &#038; over bad hills<br />
&#038;C. about noon we halted to dine [where we had dined] 12th<br />
Sep1 last Shields killed a deer, we dined and proceed on took<br />
the meat of a deer which the hunters had killed. Shields killed<br />
another deer. proceed on to the bottoms or plains of travvellers<br />
rest creek Drewyer had killed three deer, we wrode fast untill<br />
about Sunset at which time we arived at travvellers rest where<br />
we Camped the 9th &#038; 10th of Sep* last, we Camped here1 in order<br />
to Stay 2 or 3 days to refresh our horses and kill Some meat &#038;C.<br />
the Musquetoes verry troublesome here.</p>
