we put to Shore Spread our flags they sailed up to us and halted<br />
with us a Short time they were tradors from S* Louis and french-<br />
man but could Some of them Speak English, they are bound for<br />
the Mahars nations, they gave us ardent spirits buiscuits and<br />
cheese &#038;C. onion we then procd on Gibson shot an other deer<br />
from his canoe at dark we Camped on N. Side.1</p>

Wisdom [Big Hole] River. Camped2 where we left the Small<br />
canoe last year, wisdom river is verry high at this time 2 hunt-<br />
ers went out. Collins killed 2 deer and Gibson killed a fat buck<br />
this evening the beaver Sign and lodges without number all<br />
this day. they are pleantier in this valley than I have seen on<br />
the route &#038;C.</p>

in with a deer which he had killed. Shortly after all our men<br />
who Stayed back came up R. Fields had killed two deer, but<br />
Shields had not found the 2 lost horses, towards evening Gibson<br />
giged &#038; killd one of the fish we took to be Salmon and we found<br />
it to be Salmon trout, and poor, we expect they all are that is in<br />
this creek, the Musquetoes are verry troublesome.</p>

Labuche killed a black bear and a large buck &#038; a crain. Some of<br />
the other hunters wounded Several deer &#038; killed Several pheasants<br />
&#038;C. a number Indians went across this commass flat on horse<br />
back to another prarie or flat to the North of this a hunting but<br />
killed nothing. Several of our hunters went out again this after-<br />
noon our horses have excelent feed in this pleasant commass flat.<br />
Some of the hunters came in this evening and Several Stayed out<br />
in the woods for an eairly hunt in the morning, the Indians all<br />
went away from our Camp &#038;C.</p>

set out to go on about 10 miles a head and hunt at a small prarie<br />
untill we come up. our hunters all came in this afternoon and<br />
eight of them had killed each a deer Gibson Shields Shannon<br />
1 On the Weippe Prairie, some miles north of Lolo Fork, or Collins Creek,<br />
near the source of Jim Ford Creek and not far from the town of Weippe. For<br />

Goodrich Set out for the Snowey So[u]th Mountains, we burryed<br />
on the high land 1 keg of powder 1 bar led. 1 keg flour. 1 keg<br />
pork 2 kegs parchd meal the bellows &#038; tolls, augur plains, Saws<br />
axes tin cups dutch ovens, bear Skins packs of beaver Skins buf-<br />
falow Robes, &#038; a nomber of other articles, all of weight such as<br />
1 This was done because of the uncertainty as to which of the two forks was<br />
the continuation of the Missouri River proper, and the desire to determine the<br />
point as soon as possible. With the exception of Lewis and Clark, the party<br />
to a man believed the Marias to be the main river, and the one, therefore, which<br />
should be ascended. The Indians at Fort Mandan had told of the falls on<br />
the upper Missouri, and Lewis intended to hasten on in advance until he came<br />
either to them or to the &#8220;Snowy mountains.&#8221; The discovery of the former<br />
would determine they were on the right stream; of the latter, that they were<br />
ascending the wrong one.<br />

arms &#038;.C. we Compleated hurrying the articles &#038;.C. [and] got in<br />
readiness to assend the South fork, the wind from the S. West<br />
hard the evening fair &#038; fine wind from the N. W. after night<br />
became cold, high wind we have caught a considerable quan-<br />
tity of Small fish Since we lay at the forks, one kind of flat Scalled<br />
fish that we never Saw the kind before.</p>
