That night's camp, per the NPS campsite reconstruction (Bergantino): right shore 5 mi W of north Sioux City, IA
hard Breeze from the S. we proceeded on verry well passed a
large Sand bar on N. S. the wind blew so hard that we were
obledged to take a reefe in our Sail. & the Sand blew So thick
from the Sand bars that we could not see the channel far ahead &
it filled the air before us about a mile, we Saw Several woolves on
Sd Sand beach we passed the Mouth of the Grand River de
Souix1 close above a high clay Bluff below sd Sand bar on the
N. S. the white pearogue could hardly Sail for want of Ballass,
we put in several kegs of pork &. C. Shannon went out to hunt
on N. S. we proceeded on 20 odd miles to day. & camped on
S. S.2 Shannon joined us late. But killed nothing, the man
with the horses did not join us yet.
