Craig How (Oglala Lakota College) challenges mainstream narratives about the 1804 Lewis and Clark encounter with Lakota peoples at the Bad River. Using critical analysis of historical evidence—letters, maps, and gifts—he argues the expedition did not anticipate meeting Tetons, and reframes the encounter through Lakota winter count traditions and oral history spanning centuries before and after this brief contact.
