The place today: Missouri River above Great Falls, Gates of the Mountains
on early: passed Clear-water river on the north side about 50
yards wide, rapid and shallow. There are a great quantity of
currents all along the river on both sides in the small bottoms.
At breakfast time Captain Clarke with three men went on
ahead. About 11 we got through the higher part of the
mountains, and to where there is less timber and the rocks

not so large. In the forenoon we passed two small creeks
on the north side, and in the afternoon a small river on the
same side; above the mouth of which we got a deer skin, that
Captain Clarke’s man had hung up. The country continues
much the same. We made 20 miles this day.
