Neeshnepahkeeook (Cut Nose)
Neeshnepahkeeook, known as Cut Nose, was a Nez Perce chief whose nose bore a distinctive scar from a lance wound. Away on a war expedition when the Corps first passed through in the fall of 1805, he became a key figure during their 1806 return passage through Nez Perce territory. Though there was some tension between Cut Nose and fellow chief Twisted Hair over the care of the expedition's horses during the winter, Cut Nose was generally helpful and played an important diplomatic role during the Corps' extended stay with the Nez Perce in 1806.
Biography
Neeshnepahkeeook, called “Cut Nose” by the expedition, was a Nez Perce chief who interacted with the Corps of Discovery during their return journey in 1806. He received his English nickname from a disfiguring wound to his nose, reportedly received in combat.
Cut Nose was influential among the Nez Perce and participated in councils with the captains at Camp Chopunnish (Long Camp). His support helped facilitate the expedition’s extended stay and the eventual procurement of Nez Perce guides for the Bitterroot crossing.
