Tent of Many Voices
A dramatic monologue in which York, an enslaved man who accompanied the Corps of Discovery, recounts his experiences on the three-year expedition from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. York describes encounters with Indigenous nations including the Shoshone, Mandan, Nez Perce, and Flathead; his bond with Sacagawea; and his complex relationship with Captain William Clark. The narrative addresses both York's valued role during the expedition and the harsh reality of slavery he faced upon returning to civilization.
