1801–1804
Planning & Preparation
Thomas Jefferson asked Congress to fund the expedition in January 1803. Meriwether Lewis studied in Lancaster and Philadelphia, gathered supplies, invited William Clark to share the command, and brought a new keelboat down the Ohio from Pittsburgh. Through the winter of 1803 to 1804, Clark trained the men at Camp River Dubois in Illinois while Lewis worked in St. Louis.
